Commander Clippinger,
I am a senior (class of 2012) at the Marine Academy of
Science
and Technology, an NJROTC highschool in Area 4, located in Sandy Hook,
New Jersey.
As part of our senior requirement, we are currently involved in
a
Capstone Porject which incorporates the last four years of our
technology/engineering course work. My partner and I have chosen VEX
Robotics; a project that involves mechanical engineering to command a
robot to maneuver around and perform both land and sea based challenges.
This project calls for a "mentor" to assist my partner and I along the
way. The mentor is simply supposed to maintain an email-based
relationship
with my partner and I while we are working on the project and to help us
with some questions should we run into while making the robot. We have
seen the USCGA Aim video involving the water based robotics performing a
set of tasks and are planning to devise a test similar to this. I would
be
extremely grateful if you would agree to assist me in this. Thank you
for
your time.

Sure, I can serve as an e-mail mentor if you desire one. I have helped
with AIM and I'm familiar with some of the VEX hardware (AIM AROW is
VEX-based).
I don't mind, but I was just curious as to how you came up with my name
& email. Was it through SNAME or the Coast Guard?
Also, I assume you're working with a teacher at MAST who is your project
advisor? Could you tell me who he or she is?
Hope I can be of help,

Thank you so much for your cooperation and participation. We searched the Coast Guard Academy website for possible mentors. Mr. Dave Alfonse and Ms. Cheryl McDonald are both our instructors for this course and are both greatly appreciative to have you on board.
Thank you again.

Commander Clippinger,
I would like to express my apologies as I have not updated you on the progress of my senior project with which you have so kindly offered to assist me. With school, work, sports and home obligations I have been very busy (I'm sure you have been quite busy yourself), and have subsequently had a difficult time trying to include you in the process. I would now like to use this email to inform you of the current work I have done thus far with my senior project. The following is a link to my senior project blog which, if you have the time to read one day, will inform you about anything you might want to know about my project. I apologize again for the inconvenience and I will be sure to update you in a more expedient manner in the near future.
Thanks again,

Hi Rob, I wanted to thank you again for agreeing to be a mentor. As we begin this VEX Robotics project, I feel i am on schedule, as I have my summer research and my poster already completed. However, Olivia and I are beginning to be a tad worried as to the direction in which our project is heading. We are wondering if you have any ideas as to what possible missions we could have for the VEX Robot as we would like to have as many options as possible. Thanks again!

Not to worry! I have several ideas for you guys. What do you have thus far?

We are primarily focusing on cutting/taking samples of dune grass, but as of late we have been hearing from the almighty McD and Alfonse that they would prefer us not to do this, as several groups before us have done this project.

Yes, I can understand where they are coming from. One idea you guys could use is to incorporate PVC piping to make a digging tool to obtain soil samples. This is a variation of the project they may find acceptable, but you guys should probably run it by them just to make sure.

We're backkk.Haha i apologize in advance for the amount of hatred you will probably have for us by the end of the year. We were just wondering if you think PVC piping is really the best way to go due to its relative absence of dexterity when compared to other materials.
